Impacts of climate-induced migration

While it is undeniable today that anthropogenic climate change is taking place, the related effects are often still uncertain.

The debates on climate change and migration are also multifaceted, and often go far beyond the projected development of conflicts. This finding is also reflected in a series of background papers recently published by the German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF).

Through a Transatlantic Study Group on climate change and migration, which adelphi is a part of, the GMF has facilitated a deeper understanding between scientists and practitioners from the migration and environmental research communities. Dennis Taenzler, senior project manager at adelphi, has examined, together with Andrea Warnecke and Ruth Vollmer of the Bonn International Center for Conversion (BICC), the possible effects and risks of climate-related migration in receiving areas and included them in a background paper. The study group’s results are based on field studies and were subsequently discussed by decision-makers in Washington and Brussels, as well as end of June in Bonn at the Deutsche Welle’s Global Media Forum.
