An increasing number of public authorities in Germany are actively seeking to be registered under EMAS III. In a recent workshop, adelphi provided information on the key performance indicators relevant to them.
Public authorities are an important target group for EMAS (Eco Management and Audit Scheme) since they act as multipliers. Several federal agencies and ministries are aiming to implement the world’s premium environmental management system by the end of the year. Among them are the Berlin offices of the Federal Ministry for Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection and the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety, as well as the organisation for Federal Cultural Events in Berlin (KBB GmbH).
During the workshop, adelphi’s consultants did not only demonstrate which key indicators are particularly relevant for public authorities. The participating ministries’ environmental managers and representatives from Berlin and Bonn were also informed about how to work with indicators e.g. pertaining to waste, energy efficiency or water use after having registered with EMAS. adelphi is currently developing a guideline for key indicators which was outlined at the workshop.
The workshop is part of the project “Introduction of EMAS in Government Agencies” that adelphi is realizing in cooperation with Arqum.
