The "EU 1.5° Lifestyles" project has introduced four challenges this October to encourage climate-friendly living: living car-free, celebrating sustainable holidays, making dietary changes, and calculating carbon footprints. The goal is to reduce carbon footprints and share success stories.
The 2015 Paris Agreement aims to limit global warming to below 2°C, ideally 1.5°C. Achieving this is both ecologically and socially essential and requires collective effort.
To reach this target, we need to lower our carbon footprint. The "EU 1.5° Lifestyles" consortium, coordinated by adelphi research and the Research Institute for Sustainability at the Helmholtz Centre Potsdam (RIFS), is launching challenges to inspire citizens to adopt sustainable lifestyles and share their successes. Everyone is welcome to participate and contribute to the solution.
Overview of the four challenges:
Moving Car-Free – October to November 2024
This challenge encourages reducing car usage as much as possible, promoting walking, cycling, or using public transport instead. Tips are provided for coping with the colder, darker months. Changes in mobility habits are crucial for reducing carbon footprints.
Celebrating Sustainable Holidays – December 2024
The aim is to enjoy the festive season with a smaller carbon footprint. Participants are encouraged to choose sustainable gifts and travel in environmentally friendly ways.
Dietary Changes – January 2025
In January, the focus is on diet, akin to "Veganuary." This involves adopting a plant-based diet and reducing food waste, which can significantly cut down carbon footprints.
Calculating Carbon Footprint – February 2025
In the final challenge, participants calculate their carbon footprint and identify key influencing factors. This is the first step towards a lifestyle compatible with the 1.5° target.

Participating in these challenges offers the chance to understand and lessen your environmental impact. Participants can share their experiences and submit success stories, starting mid-October 2024 via this link.
The challenges are being held in Germany, Hungary, Latvia, Spain, and Sweden. This EU-funded project examines how personal lifestyle choices can become more sustainable within political strategies and socio-economic frameworks. Key challenges include limited data on the impact of different lifestyles on climate change, lack of evidence for the acceptance of drastic changes, and political strategies that overlook structural barriers. adelphi research has organised think tanks in these countries to identify obstacles and support factors for sustainable lifestyles and communicate the findings.
