In the framework of German development cooperation, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) commissioned adelphi to undertake a study trip to successful water stewardship projects in Europe, this November.
Cooperative approaches for the sustainable management of European water resources gain increasing attention from policy-makers and practitioners. In order to reach the targets of the European Water Framework Directive and other standards, companies, authorities and water suppliers increasingly rely on joint approaches. Precisely this cooperation that makes it possible to identify cost-efficient solutions and to reach shared common goals.
During a five-day study trip through five European countries (Netherlands, Germany, France, Austria, Spain), representatives from GIZ’s cooperation projects in Africa gained an insight into the challenges and successful approaches of European water resources management. During the closing event, speakers and participants discussed the necessary prerequisites and conditions for successful cooperation. How can leaders be identified and supported? What are the success factors for the initiation and long-term implementation of joint projects? How can the experiences be applied and adapted to the African context? Many of the visited project sites were highly relevant for the participants’ current work.
Participants showed special interest in the question of how to address the regional consequences of mining. Moreover, they discussed how farmers, chemical companies and water suppliers can cooperate in order to guarantee access to good quality and affordable water in the long term. These questions directly referred to current projects of the participants from Uganda, Zambia, Tanzania, Kenya and South Africa.
