Saving the English coral garden, restoring dynamic dunes, or reintroducing the Iberian lynx – these are just three out of 22 initiatives competing for the very first Natura 2000 Awards. The finalists have been announced today – four weeks before the prestigious prizes will be presented in Brussels.
The Natura 2000 Award aims to recognise excellence in Natura 2000 site management, showcase the value of the Natura 2000 network for biodiversity, local communities and economies and to boost public awareness. adelphi is leading a consortium organising the Award for the European Commission in 2014 – its first year.
Today a shortlist of 22 finalists for the inaugural Award was unveiled, reflecting the diversity and dedication of conservation efforts across Europe. From this shortlist, five winners will now be selected representing each of the five categories: Conservation, Socio-Economic Benefits, Communication, Reconciling Interests/Perceptions, as well as Networking and Cross-Border Cooperation. The winners will be announced at a high-profile ceremony in Brussels on 21 May 2014. Trophies will be presented by the European Commissioner for the Environment, Janez Potocnik, and members of the Award jury. Those with an interest can register to attend the ceremony online.
