Coordinating sustainable supply chains: Expert dialogue explores opportunities for SME

How can medium-sized businesses orient their supply chain management toward more sustainability? Exchanging experiences is the main goal of an expert dialogue with representatives from business, policy, and civil society taking place in Berlin on 7 April. Registration is ongoing now.

In light of the ecological and social impacts of globalisation, businesses are being challenged more than ever to fulfil their societal responsibilities, including in their supply chains. A critical public, governments, and investors with an eye for sustainability are all demanding action.

How medium-sized businesses can engage in sustainable supply chain management will be the subject of an expert dialogue with representatives and actors from politics, business, and civil society. adelphi has conceptualised and is putting on the event on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB) and the German Environment Agency (UBA).

Programme

The goal of the expert dialogue is an exchange between specialists on implementing elements of sustainable supply chain management (e.g. establishing responsibilities and their limits, use of standards, internal organisation) in everyday business practices. In the course of three presentations, BMUB and UBA will discuss the topic “Sustainable Business Leadership” from a political perspective and introduce the latest developments in environmental management.

Daniel Weiss (adelphi) will further introduce the specifics of a business guide to sustainable supply chain management being developed by adelphi for the BMUB and UBA. Following that, Andreas von Angerer from oekom research will present the results of the annual report on global corporate responsibility “Corporate Responsibility Review 2016”, and will sketch out the current status of sustainability in business leadership in consideration of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

The event will be rounded off by three talks given by selected business representatives and discussion sessions on specific questions relating to practical implementation of sustainable supply chain management.
