adelphi will foster capacity development in the region for addressing climate change impacts and develop a methodology and a GIS-based tool for assessing and mapping vulnerability in the MENA water sector.
Water supply in the countries of the Middle East and North Africa is already under pressure from population growth and economic development. The climate change even deteriorates this difficult situation. The Arab Ministerial Water Council of the League of Arab States is seeking a better understanding of climate change in the region and enhancing the methods to assess and map its impacts on water resources as a key entry point for planning successful adaptation measures. The GIZ supports the efforts and aims at strengthening the capacities of regional and national water institutions in adapting successfully to adverse climate change implications.
adelphi has been tasked with the development of a methodology for an integrated vulnerability assessment in the water sector taking the bio-physical impacts of climate change and socio-economic vulnerabilities into account, partnering with a regional expert on Environmental Impact Assessments as well as with the Laboratory for Remote Sensing at the University of North Carolina. Furthermore, a GIS-based mapping tool is developed which allows for water institutions and regulating bodies in the region to identify potential hot spots. For both products the consultants will provide manuals and trainings.
