With the last seminar on “National Adaptation Strategy Development” taking place in Yerevan, the capital of Armenia, adelphi successfully completed a three-year training programme on Environmental Policy and Law in the South Caucasus. On behalf of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), since 2009 adelphi conceptualised and implemented a series of 33 training seminars in Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia as well as three delegation visits to Germany.
The capacity building activities and delegation visits primarily addressed the Environment Ministries of the three South Caucasus countries, with additional participants from scientific institutions and non-governmental organisations. The thematic focus was on “Adaptation to Climate Change”, “Green Economy” and “Strategic Environmental Policy Planning”, complemented by several management trainings. Furthermore, in cooperation with the IUCN Environmental Law Center adelphi conducted a multilevel training series on “Biodiversity Conservation”.
The capacity building programme aimed at improving the capacity of the environmental administrations and subordinated agencies in the three South Caucasus countries to modernise their environmental policy and legislation and to become acquainted with the basic principles of EU environmental legislation.
