Belfius: A spotlight on three projects financed under PF4EE

A trigeneration unit powering a hospital site, a cogeneration unit powering an apartment building and comprehensive energy efficiency improvements in social housing are examples of projects in Belgium that were successfully financed and implemented under Belfius Bank’s Energy Efficiency Package.

Belgium now has a hospital that is primarily powered by renewable energy, thanks to the installation of the country’s first trigeneration unit at a hospital site in Godinne, Namur Province. Based on the gasification of waste wood, the project generates renewable power for 50 percent of the hospital’s electricity requirements, 90 percent of its hot water needs for sanitary use and heating, and 25 percent of cooling energy needed for its refrigeration circuits. This cutting edge environmental innovation project has been co-financed through BEEP/PF4EE.

In Brussels, a project financed through third-party investment based on a combination of a BEEP/PF4EE loan and eco-citizen financing led to the installation of a highly efficient natural gas cogeneration facility as well as the complete roof renovation of a 27-storey apartment building. Jointly, both measures resulted in annual primary energy savings of 1,100 MWh and annual energy cost savings of 40,000 euros.

In the third example, Anderlechtse Haard, one of the largest social housing companies in the Brussels Capital Region, signed an energy performance contract with an energy service company to improve the energy efficiency of Anderlechtse Haard’s residential buildings. This included the installation of 15 new building management systems, seven photovoltaic systems with more than 160 solar panels, and seven cogeneration units. The respective measures were primarily financed through a 3,8 million euro BEEP/PF4EE loan.
