In between the negotiations on climate change politics Ban Ki Moon introduced a successful project for sustainability: the Ghana Bamboo Bikes Initiative. Also, UNFCCC Executive Secretary Christiana Figueres tested the bike that provides women with special opportunities.
He put on a crash helmet and got off the scene: UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon had a dramatic moment on 20th November at the UN climate conference in Warsaw, when he got on a bamboo bike. After several minutes he got back from his short tour around the conference center just to pose with the manufacturers in front of the world press.
The Ghana Bamboo Bikes Initiative made more than 800 of these bikes last year, which not only benefits the environment by using bamboo but gives jobs and crucial transport to villagers in many parts of Africa, according to BBC News. The company not only provides Ghana's rural population with more opportunities for mobility. Also, women benefit from the demand as it offers them new job opportunities.
In 2010, the Ghana Bamboo Bikes Initiative won the SEED Award and had been coached by the adelphi hosted SEED Initiative. Find more information on the Ghana Bamboo Bikes Initiative under www.seedinit.org.
