adelphi researchers contributed to the new publication Climate Change, Human Security and Violent Conflict. Challenges for Societal Stability of the Hexagon Series on Human and Environmental Security and Peace.
Kerstin Fritzsche and Achim Maas develops an analytical framework for studying the impact of climate change on Iraq’s security. They identify the regional security complex (RSC) and the regional environmental security complex (RESC) for Iraq and reflect on their possible development in the future. Alexander Carius and Achim Maas show complex security challenges which the Pacific Isle States are facing as a result of climate change. In the region, indirect threats such as food scarcity or migration and severe consequences for territorial integrity and sovereignty of constituencies can occur. Dennis Taenzler and Felix Ries scrutinise possible implications of the REDD+ mechanism for peace and stability issues. He underlines that REDD+ should be implemented in a conflict-sensitive manner. In general, climate policies can only have a stabilizing effect on conflict situations under this condition.
