Mauricio Castro

Mauricio Castro-Salazar has been cooperating with adelphi as an Senior Associate since 2014. His specialization lies mainly on project coordination, green finance & green credit lines, greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation & climate change adaptation, environmental policies and sustainable development promotion. He has 25 years of professional experience in more than 20 countries in Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, Africa and Asia with his main clients being the KfW Development Bank, Inter-American Development Bank (IADB/BID), the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), as well as governments and private companies.

During the last ten years, Mauricio has been involved as a team leader or senior expert in climate change mitigation concepts, Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), the carbon market- and similar projects. Some of his current projects are: “Natural Resources Management by Indigenous Communities and Campesinos in Central America”; “Municipal Environmental Protection Program (PROAMU) in the Mexico`s Northern Border”; “Technical Assistance for the Environmental Credit Line in Costa Rica”; “Costa Rica Carbon Market design”; “South-South Cooperation Program in Benin, Bhutan and Costa Rica”.

From 2005 to 2012, he worked as an Executive Director in Fundecooperación. Within this period, he was also the Customer Manager of Ecosecurities for Central America and the Caribbean, in charge of carbon market projects and leads.

In 1998, Mauricio was appointed for five years as Secretary of the Central American Commission on Development and Environment (CCAD), a regional organization of the Central American Integration System that gathers the seven ministers of Environment and Natural Resources of Central America. In this position, he was in charge of several environmental management projects in the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef and Mesoamerican Biological Corridor. Furthermore, he acted as a Secretary of the technical committees on climate change, biodiversity, protected areas, forest, the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and others.

Mauricio Castro studied Civil Engineering at the University of Costa Rica (Dipl.-Ing. degree) and Environmental Sciences and Engineering at the University of Cantabria, Spain (Magister Scientiae).
