Translated title: World map of environmental conflicts: Approaches to a new typology
In the present study, with reference to the WGBU Main Report 2007 "Safety Risk Climate Change", a typology of "Environmental Conflicts" is being developed on the basis of empirical conflict data. In a first step existing categorization and definition approaches of environmental safety research will be presented and already existing conflict typologies will be considered. In a second step, local, national and cross-border environmental conflicts between 1980 and 2005 are visualized in a "World Map of Environmental Conflicts". A total of 73 environmental conflicts were systematically recorded in a database. The relevance of the environmental conflicts recorded there depends on the focus of the main attention to (long-term) processes of global (climate) change. From the tabular and geographical overview, different and recurring patterns of conflicts were identified. Based on the literature study and this empirical material, a specific typology of environmental conflicts is developed. In the text smaller maps are used, which are shown in the appendix with a larger resolution.
