As Indonesia is highly vulnerable to environmental incidents and developments - some of which are directly linked to climate change - the issue of a more sustainable path of development is followed with great interest. At the same time, Indonesia has the fourth largest population on earth, is an emerging economy and already one of the world’s largest contributors of greenhouse gas emissions and therefore possesses great potential in contributing to face global challenges of climate change and plays an important role in following the goal to limit global warming. In this context, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) in Indonesia has commissioned adelphi to carry out this project, which was settled in the framework of the "Policy Advice for Environment and Climate Change" programme (PAKLIM). The aim of the project was twofold. Firstly, it explored the key sustainable development trends in Indonesia based on four key issue areas – Green Growth/Green Economy, Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP), Climate Change and Biodiversity – as well as their interaction with each other. Secondly, it provided guidance for selecting a set of indicators for measuring the progress of sustainable development in Indonesia within the key issue areas based on insights from the international debate on Sustainable Development Indicators (SDI).
adelphi's role in this project in close cooperation with the GIZ in Indonesia was to produce a policy paper on the prospects of sustainable development in Indonesia in the light of the four key areas and their interaction as well as providing recommendations regarding utility and applicability of SDI based on the review what could be learned from international best practices.
