Grappling with conflict and political instability, climate change is contributing to a host of new problems across Sudan. Disasters are becoming more frequent, combining with ongoing violence to displace hundreds of thousands of people. Conflicts over environmental resources are rising, and expected to become more pronounced as conditions worsen for farmers, herders, and others who depend on the agricultural sector to make a living.
Focusing on environmental conflicts and peace-building, the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has been working to build climate security across Sudan. adelphi research supported this work in 2023, contributing to:
Increasing Sustainable Food Security and Climate Resilience of the Vulnerable Communities in and around Dinder National Park to Conserve Biodiversity and Ecosystems Services
Developing knowledge products for the Wadi El Ku Catchment Management Project
Developing climate security assessments and synthesis summary for six states
Research and consultation at adelphi research
As part of this project, adelphi research reviewed existing data, synthesised with climate change research, collected data in Sudan, and conducted workshops with relevant stakeholders. Occupying an advisory and research position in the project, adelphi research brought its long-standing expertise in the relationship between climate change, conflict, and security to UNEP’s work in Sudan.
