The global decline in species is as big a challenge for humanity as climate change, according to the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES). The latest IPBES report estimates that without a change in current trends, 80% of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to poverty, hunger, health, water, cities, climate, life below water, and life on land will not be achieved.
The loss of biodiversity is also a central task for future development policy. It plays a crucial role for the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). Germany is one of the largest contributors to international biodiversity financing, with the BMZ providing about 80% of Germany's contribution. Key areas include protected areas, biodiversity financing and resource mobilisation, combating poaching and illegal wildlife trade, as well as equitable benefit-sharing and marine protection.
The sector project "Biodiversity, Environment and Oceans" of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) supports the BMZ in shaping policy and implementation processes to promote biodiversity, environmental, and marine protection. The primary focus is on achieving the goals of the 2030 Agenda, the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF), and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), as well as closely linked international processes related to the G7 and G20, and the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.
The consortium of adelphi, GeoMedia, and s.Pro, along with other experienced experts, supports the sector project in fulfilling its advisory role to the BMZ. The specific focus is on the areas of the GBF and CBD process, biodiversity financing, protected areas, combating poaching and illegal wildlife trade, nature-based solutions, as well as impact monitoring, communication, and public relations.
