Support for the GIZ Sector Programme on Biodiversity on Land

According to the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), global species extinction is just as great a challenge for humanity as climate change. The latest IPBES report estimates that if we continue on current trajectories, 80 percent of the sustainable development goals (SDGs) relating to poverty, hunger, health, water, cities, climate, underwater life and life on land will not be achieved.

The loss of biodiversity is thus also a development issue. Germany is one of the most important donors for international biodiversity financing, and the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) provides around 80 percent of the German contribution. Priority areas include protected areas, biodiversity financing, poaching and illegal wildlife trade, and access and benefit sharing as well as marine conservation.

The Sector Programme "Biodiversity on Land" of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) supports the BMZ in biodiversity policy design and implementation processes. This includes, in addition to the preparation of the Post 2020 framework, also other processes under the Convention on Biological Diversity (e.g. SBSTTA 24 & 25, SBI-4, WG-8j) and closely linked international processes such as the implementation of Agenda 2030 with regard to biodiversity, G7 and G20 processes, and the UN Decade for Ecosystem Restoration.

The consortium of adelphi and GeoMedia together with other experienced experts supports the GIZ Sector Programme in fulfilling its advisory support role for BMZ. Specifically, the consortium will support the GIZ Sector Programme with respect to the CBD Post-2020 process, biodiversity financing, protected areas, combating poaching and illegal wildlife trade, nature-based solutions, impact monitoring and communication.
