Energy management systems in practice

The standard EN 16001:2009: "Energy Management Systems - Requirements with guidance for use" was published on July 1, 2009. The aim of the standard is to assist organisations and businesses in developing systems and processes to improve their energy efficiency. The purpose of the project carried out by adelphi was to promote the practical implementation of EN 16001 in Germany and to support activities on an international level to develop an international energy management systems standard (ISO 50001).

adelphi initially conducted an international comparative study to analyse the status quo with regard to existing national, standardised energy management systems (EMS), and to assess the influence of finance policy and other ancillary measures aimed at promoting implementation of an EMS, in order to identify its potential in terms of German energy efficiency policy. The study focused on experience gathered in pioneering countries such as The Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Ireland and the USA. Based on the comparative study, a guide to the practical implementation of EN 16001 in German businesses was compiled. The guide follows the sequence of DIN EN 16001, offers a wealth of practical tips, and incorporates a comparison with the EMAS regulation and with ISO 14001.
