The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) holds considerable potential for carbon credit projects, particularly from avoided deforestation. In this project, adelphi organised a pivotal conference on Carbon Markets in the DRC, conducted in Kinshasa in October 2023. This gathering successfully brought together more than 100 stakeholders from government agencies, the private sector, civil society, and academia who actively engage in carbon pricing within the DRC. Through extensive discussions, participants delved into the next steps required to establish a sustainable and high-quality carbon market. Much of the debate focused on the forestry sector, but participants also highlighted the need to look beyond forestry to other sectors that bear great opportunities for the DRC. adelphi subsequently compiled a government-targeted report that summarises the key findings of the conference and outlines recommendations.
