The project, led by Fratini Vergano with adelphi as a consortium partner, aims to develop a "Best Practice Manual for the Development of Minimum Standards and Technical Requirements for Plastic Packaging and Labeling." This initiative is part of the Southeast Asia Regional Program on Combating Marine Plastics Pollution (SEA-MaP). National experts will support the stocktaking analysis to ensure comprehensive and region-specific insights.
Project Activities
The project involves several key activities:
Stocktaking and Gap Analysis: Conducting a thorough review of existing standards and labeling practices for plastic packaging in ASEAN Member States (AMS) to identify gaps and areas for improvement.
Manual Preparation: Developing a user-friendly and visually appealing manual that provides practical guidance for policymakers, standardization bodies, producers’ associations, and other stakeholders on establishing and implementing plastic packaging and labeling standards.
Stakeholder Consultations: Organizing technical and government-level consultations to gather input and share findings with key stakeholders, including AMS governments, the ASEAN Secretariat, and other relevant entities.
Dissemination and Communication: Creating a package of outreach products, including presentations, videos, and social media materials, to promote the adoption of the developed standards.
The expected outcomes of the project are multifaceted. By harmonizing standards, the project aims to enhance trade facilitation and regional economic integration. It also seeks to promote environmental sustainability by encouraging sustainable production and consumption patterns, thereby reducing plastic waste and marine litter. Additionally, the project aims to increase awareness and build capacity among stakeholders, supporting the transition towards a circular economy and sustainable plastic packaging practices.
