The environment and conflict debate has been driven by Northern academics and institutions. However, policy initiatives and programmes by international and regional organizations in the past raised significant concerns of developing countries on how to prevent and mitigate environmental conflicts.
Hence, a multi-year programme on "Environment, Development and Sustainable Peace" has been launched by adelphi and its partner institutions to foster dialogue between North and South and to allow for the development of a constructive agenda towards sustainable development and peace promotion. It brought together practitioners from ten developing countries and experts from industrialised nations. Different approaches to protect resources and the environment and how they are related to conflict and cooperation were discussed and developed during international workshops to be published as policy briefings.
