Experiences learned from cooperation in the field of environment in the Maghreb countries

Environmental issues play a central role in Germany’s technical cooperation with North African countries. For over thirty years, the German "Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit" (GTZ) has been involved in environmental and resource protection in Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria. The activities range from sectoral water, sewage, waste or energy projects over institutional development in the environmental field and cross-sectoral tasks of environmental management to implementing international conventions and programmes.

adelphi analysed, on behalf of the GTZ, the experiences learned from the German-Maghreb environmental cooperation work. The research focused on the following questions: How have environmental conditions in the three countries changed and what role have GTZ projects played? What approaches proved successful in cooperating? How did the cooperation react to international trends within the environmental policy sector? What international and national issues should shape future environmental cooperation in Maghreb and which prospects offer regional cooperation in these areas?
