Tourism is one of the most important industries in Thailand and consumes significant amounts of energy. On behalf of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), adelphi conducted a project on energy efficiency on the island Kho Khao and the Andaman coast – heavily -devastated by the tsunami -
In addition to organisational measures and investments to increase energy efficiency in five selected hotels, adelphi also developed a feasibility study on decentralised power supply for the resort island. At the closing events in late March in Khao Lak and Bangkok, the participating hotels already reported a significant reduction of their energy costs and as a result their CO2 emissions.
For the sustainable character of the project, it is of particular importance that the technologies used have been attained from the region and that the experiences gained can be implemented in other hotels in Thailand thanks to, the creation of a guide. Along the Andaman coast, a training series on energy efficiency in hotels has already been conducted to further spread the experiences from Kho Khao and Khao Lak in the region.
