Climate change, in combination with trends such as population growth, urbanisation and inequality, poses a threat to the stability of states and societies. It is necessary to better integrate climate change adaptation, peacebuilding and conflict prevention in order to effectively address this potential threat. How can this be done in practice? The authors of this policy brief explore key issues of such a holistic approach and outline how to better integrate climate change adaptation and peacebuilding in the future. This includes:
Using insights from peace and conflict assessments to inform the process of climate change adaptation
Mainstreaming climate change adaptation in conflict-prone contexts by applying conflict-sensitive approaches
Building robust governance structures at local, national and regional levels
