At the Bonn climate negotiations, adelphi global contributed to discussions on how climate policy can promote resilience, stability and peace. With inputs from Janani Vivekananda and Dennis Tänzler, adelphi highlighted why conflict sensitive climate action matters on the road to COP31.
The climate negotiations in Bonn have drawn to a close. Alongside preparations for COP31 and modest progress in the negotiations themselves, adelphi actively contributed to discussions on the role of climate policy in promoting resilience and stability.

Janani Vivekananda, Director of Diplomacy and Security at adelphi global, addressed this issue in her keynote speech at the main meeting of the International Climate Initiative. She underlined that sustained climate action cannot be separated from questions of peace and conflict sensitivity. Climate impacts and climate policies both reshape who has access to land, water, energy and income. In other words, climate action changes power. For climate finance and climate programming, this means that conflict sensitivity is not an add on. It is essential to ensuring that climate action strengthens resilience, social cohesion and stability.

Like other financing mechanisms, the International Climate Initiative can be used as a tool of climate foreign policy to specifically strengthen peace and stability. This is particularly important in contexts where climate impacts interact with existing social, political and economic tensions.

The field of ecosystem-based adaptation also has significant links to sustainable and peaceful resource management. During the 12th Knowledge Day of the Friends of Ecosystem based Adaptation, Dennis Tänzler, Executive Director of adelphi global, contributed to the discussion by highlighting the potential of ecosystem-based adaptation in the context of peace and stability.
FEBA serves as an action-oriented network and a proactive force advancing the technical and financial outputs required to bridge the persistent implementation gap and scale ecosystem-based adaptation globally. The Knowledge Day offered in depth discussions on catalysing political and financial action, as well as the need for alignment of ecosystem-based adaptation reporting across the Rio Conventions.
