What's next for the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals?

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and 169 targets form the frame of reference for German, European and international sustainability policy, Germany's development cooperation and its engagement at multilateral and global level. On the one hand, current analyses partly observe significant progress in the implementation and goal achievement of the 2030 Agenda. On the other hand, they also highlight the need to intensify efforts, as many SDGs will most likely not be achieved by 2030.

Against this backdrop, adelphi produced a study in the project which appreciates critically the progress in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda. It elaborated what has changed for the better since the agenda’s adoption and how this can be built upon further, without neglecting the existing discrepancies between goals and current status in implementation. In particular, the study focused on the extent to which the 2030 Agenda has established itself as a guideline or orientation framework in politics, business and society. In addition to an overview of the overall development in implementation to date, the study identified and described selected examples that illustrate the effectiveness of the 2030 Agenda in politics, business and society.
