Twenty years after the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, comprehensive reform of sustainability policy is still necessary both nationally and internationally. As a concept for society as a whole, sustainable development demands not only action by governments, but also by other societal actors, in particular the private sector. With an analysis on sustainability strategies in public policy and the economy the book provides an overview of existing concepts, goals and implementation mechanisms. In selected national and international case studies, new perspectives and options for the promotion of innovation and public-private cooperation for sustainable development are discussed.

The project forms part of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research’s key theme of "Innovative political fields of action for sustainable development".
